Description:

Set in New York City in the mid-1950s, this award-winning musical by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim explores the intense rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The members of the Sharks are first-generation Americans from Puerto Rico taunted by the Jets, a white group who consider themselves the true Americans. The Jets are led by the fearless Riff (Taylor Minckley) who has a hot temper and a desire to wipe out the Puerto Ricans once and for all. The Sharks are led by the equally quick tempered Bernardo (Ryan Fulkerson) who is ready to prove that the Puerto Ricans have equal rights in America. The young protagonist, Tony (Jesse Carruth), one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria (Kayla Jamison), the sister of Bernardo. Bernstein’s score for the musical has become extremely popular; it includes “Something’s Coming,” “Maria,” “America,” “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “Jet Song,” “I Feel Pretty,” “One Hand, One Heart” and “Cool.”
