COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A Colorado Springs man convicted of beating, kidnapping and robbing a woman has been sentenced to 63 1/2 years in prison.

A judge handed down the sentence Wednesday for 43-year-old Timothy Allen Clapp. He was convicted in August.

Prosecutors say Clapp attacked the woman with a piece of wood in May 2008 in a parking lot, bound and gagged her with duct tape and then drove away in her car, with her in the back.

The woman, who was 59, was able to loosen the tape and call police on her cell phone.

She told the judge Wednesday she still has nightmares and coughing spells from the attack.

Clapp’s lawyers say he was drunk at the time. El Paso County District Judge Richard Hall says alcohol may explain what happen but doesn’t excuse it.
