A pair of 13-year-olds who were stealing from cars in Lafayette this weekend led police straight to the stolen loot — with footprints in the snow.

The footprints, in fact, showed police that the duo approached at least 77 cars in old town Lafayette, before finding at least seven that were unlocked, police said in a statement this afternoon.

The trail Saturday morning eventually led police to a home in the Wild Ridge subdivision. The boys confessed and provided police the items they had stolen, investigators said.

The types of items stolen was not released, but police think the boys may have had more victims. Anyone whose car might have been broken into on Saturday can call police at 303-665-5571.

The boy’s trail went from the 800 block of East Simpson Street, south on Burlington Street, east on Cleveland Street, north on Gough Street and west on Baseline Road.
