Justin Townes Earle is Steve Earle’s stylish singer son — and one helluva songwriter, too. Photos by Brian Carney.

It was a night of brilliant songwriters.

A devoted crowd showed up at the Bluebird Theater on Friday to revel in the light of Justin Townes Earle and his famous phrasing — and Joe Pug, whose lyrical content and thoughtful music is spreading like wildfire in singer-songwriter/indie folk circles.

Wearing a jacket and tie, Earle — yep, Steve’s son — played a selection of songs that spanned his young career, including a couple solid tracks from his recent “Midnight at the Movies.” GQ magazine recently named Earle one of the most stylish men in the world, and he looked the part.

Looking more casual was Joe Pug, a Chicago-based singer-songwriter who is tied to Earle’s world via whip-smart lyrics and the emotive music that pushes everything along. Pug recently released his excellent debut album “Messenger.”
