A man suspected of stealing a car crashed the vehicle outside a middle school and was injured in the accident.

The crashed happened after 6:30 a.m. this morning in front of Rocky Heights Middle School, 11033 Monarch Blvd., according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspected car thief, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, according to a media release from the sheriff’s office.

The stolen vehicle collided with a silver Subaru outside the school. A woman, the driver of the Subaru, received “minor injuries” in the accident; a boy in the car was not injured.

The stolen car was reported about 6:30 a.m. from the driveway of a Highlands Ranch home where it was warming up unattended in a driveway, the release said.

Deputies responding to the car theft spotted the vehicle near University Boulevard and Highlands Ranch Parkway but called off pursuit because of slick roads and heavy traffic.

Moments later the sheriff’s office received a call about the accident at the school.

When deputies arrived they found the suspect in the stolen vehicle with “serious injuries.”

Further details on his injuries were not available.

The investigation is ongoing.
