WASHINGTON — The U.S. Transportation Department may lay off some employees Monday, including about 150 of the 600 people who work at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which oversees automotive safety, according to a department official.

Department workers may be furloughed without pay because a funding measure stalled in Congress, the person said. The Senate failed to complete action on a bill to extend unemployment benefits. The bill also extends authorization to spend money from the federal Highway Trust Fund, which bankrolls parts of the Transportation Department.

Department officials are working through the weekend to determine which employees should be exempted as performing critical safety functions. Bloomberg News
