A scam that originated in Canada nearly fleeced a Golden grandfather of $900, police said this afternoon.
A woman called and pretended to be the victim’s granddaughter, asking for money to get out of jail. She asked the grandfather to send money to a person she said was her lawyer. police said.
An alert bank teller warned the concerned grandfather to call police, instead.
Golden police traced the call from the fake granddaughter to a cell phone in Montreal. Golden Detective Marcus Williams called and talked to a person pretending to be the lawyer who again asked for the money, according to the statement.
Golden police are working with Canadian authorities to find and arrest the scammers, the department said in a press release this afternoon.
Golden police said be wary of such scams and never provide money or personal information to people they do not know.
