A 16-year-old prosecutors called a known gang member was found guilty today of firing a gun at a group of boys on bicycles in Greeley last August.
A 15-year-old Rene Garcia was hit in the mouth, but escaped fatal injury. The story was publicized nationally because Garcia was hit in such a way that he was able to spit the 22-caliber bullet from his mouth.
A Weld County jury found Raul Rojas guilty on 24 counts, including seven counts each of attempted criminal manslaughter, reckless endangerment and menacing.
He was tried as an adult and faces one to three years in prison when he is sentenced on April 6, prosecutors said.
The shooting happened after Rojas and others in a car in a McDonald’s parking lot “exchanged words” with the boys, all juveniles, on bicycles, according to police reports.
