Two people were seriously injured and several others were hospitalized in a chain-reaction wreck Saturday on Interstate 25 in Douglas County involving 16 vehicles, authorities say.

One person was flown by helicopter to Swedish Medical Center, and another in serious condition was taken by ambulance to a hospital, said Trooper Ryan Sullivan of the Colorado State Patrol.

Several other motorists were taken by ambulance to hospitals with lesser injuries, Sullivan said. He did not have an exact figure.

The northbound lanes of I-25 were closed for several hours, he said.

A series of accidents happened at 9:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-25 on a wet, slushy and icy highway, Sullivan said.

Troopers are investigating what triggered the initial accident.

Most people involved in the pileup were not injured, Sullivan said.
