St. Patrick’s Day revelers set a record for drunk-driving arrests in Colorado this year, authorities said today.

Ninety-four agencies across the state made 688 DUI arrests between 6 p.m. on March 12 and 3 a.m. last Thursday, according to preliminary information. Denver police made 93 of those arrests.

This year’s total topped the 668 made by 90 agencies during the same period last year.

“The Colorado State Patrol and law enforcement agencies across the state were able to remove 688 dangerous drunk drivers from our roadways before they hurt or killed someone, but we know it could have been much worse,” said Col. James Wolfinbarger, chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said in a statement.

More than 200 people are killed in Colorado each year in alcohol-related crashes, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
