Alcoa Inc., the largest U.S. aluminum producer, will record charges in the first quarter related to the shutdown of some facilities and passage of the health care overhaul.
The company projects a pretax charge of $180 million to shut down and demolish smelters in Frederick, Md., and Badin, N.C. Alcoa will record an $80 million noncash charge because of a change in the tax treatment of Medicare Part D prescription-drug reimbursements for retirees.
