SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said today that it has sentenced an American to eight years’ hard labor and a fine equal to $700,000 for entering the country illegally and unspecified hostile acts.
Aijalon Mahli Gomes acknowledged his wrongdoing in court Tuesday, the Korean Central News Agency said.
It was not immediately clear why Gomes, who taught English in South Korea, went to the North.
The State Department has said he should be returned to the United States.
