DENVER—A Colorado Democrat getting a lot of attention for her vote on the health care overhaul is explaining her vote to constituents on the phone.
Rep. Betsy Markey of Fort Collins held her second conference call with voters Wednesday. Markey is a freshman Democrat who voted against the health care overhaul last year, but changed her vote to “yes” after the bill was changed. Republicans say she’s a top target for defeat because Republicans outnumber Democrats in her district.
Several callers challenged Markey and wondered whether the new law would violate the Constitution or bankrupt their businesses. Markey said most small businesses won’t be required to insure employees and said that requiring health coverage is a “shared responsibility.”
