NEW YORK—Law enforcement officials say a man charged in a plot to attack the New York subway system with homemade bombs plans to plead guilty.

Two law enforcement officials say Zarein Ahmedzay (zah-RAYN’ ah-MIHD’-zay) is expected to enter the plea Friday afternoon in Brooklyn federal court.

The officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because formal court action had not yet been taken.

Ahmedzay had pleaded not guilty to making false statements to the FBI about a plan by admitted al-Qaida associate Najibullah Zazi (nah-jee-BOO’-lah ZAH’-zee) to launch suicide bombing attacks on Manhattan subway lines.

Authorities said the attacks were timed for days after the eighth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorism.

There was no immediate response to a phone message left with Ahmedzay’s lawyer.
