OAKLAND, Calif. — Cleveland closer Kerry Wood wasn’t happy after pitching a one-inning simulated game, but the Indians are waiting to see how he responds before deciding on the next step in his rehab work.

The veteran right-hander, who hasn’t pitched in a game since March 10, said he was sore and wasn’t as sharp in Friday’s session. That might be a red flag for the Indians, but manager Manny Acta stopped short of calling it a setback for Wood.

“We have to wait and see how he feels,” Acta said.

Wood is planning on throwing a bullpen session today.

Fed Cup: Oudin prevails

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Melanie Oudin had emotion and a hometown-flavored crowd on her side. Those advantages just took some time to kick in.

Oudin beat Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3 after slow starts in both sets. Then Russia’s Elena Dementieva evened up the Fed Cup semifinals matchup with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Dementieva, ranked No. 6 in the world, set up a rematch today with Oudin in the best-of-five match.
