BOULDER — The pilot of a small plane ran from the scene of a crash landing at Boulder Municipal Airport this morning, after hitting a car on Independence Road then sheering off a wing against a utility pole.

“It’s peculiar, and a bit bizarre,” Boulder sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Dimond said of the hit-and-run.

Sheriff’s deputies and police dogs are searching for the pilot, who ran back toward the airport carrying a black satchel after the plane crossed Independence and came to a stop in a field to the north. He was described as a white male, about 60 years old, with a stocky build and thinning gray hair.

According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the plane is a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza 35 registered to Curtis Charles, of Commerce City.
