CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On a day when Tiger Woods endured a shocking meltdown, missing the cut for only the sixth time in his career, Billy Mayfair birdied his last hole for a 4-under-par 68 that gave him the second- round lead Friday at the Quail Hollow Championship at 8-under 136.

Mayfair led by one shot over two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, who had a 67.

There were good scores Friday. Just not by the world’s No. 1 player.

J.P. Hayes matched the course record at Quail Hollow with a 64 and was in the group at 138 with Masters champion Phil Mickelson (68), Pebble Beach winner Dustin Johnson (65) and Paul Goydos (70).

Woods only hit two fairways, none after the fourth hole.

“He’s obviously got things in his mind other than what’s going between the ropes right now,” said British Open champion Stewart Cink, who played with Woods. “You’ve got to learn how to balance what’s going on in your life with your golf. And if you’re not in a great place mentally, then it sometimes shows up out there.”

Wie takes lead in blustery conditions

MORELIA, Mexico — Michelle Wie shot a 5-under 68 to take the second-round lead in the Tres Marias Championship at 12-under.

Wie, who won her lone LPGA Tour title 5 1/2 months ago in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, was a stroke ahead of Brittany Lincicome (67) and first-round leader Ai Miyazato (72).

Ochoa, who is retiring after this tournament, shot a 73, leaving her five strokes behind Wie.

Wie birdied seven of the first 12 holes without dropping a shot, overcoming swirling afternoon winds that made scoring low difficult for other late starters on the mountain-side course. This meant most of the first-round leaders.

Wie reached 7-under — and 14-under for the tournament — with a spectacular birdie on 16, but faded and finished with two bogeys.

“It was a windy day out there,” Wie said. “Ever since we got on the range it was blowing. So it’s nice to be out of the wind.”
