GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—Glenwood Springs has submitted an application to purchase about 80 acres to expand a landfill.
City Manager Jeff Hecksel says the city is awaiting a response from the Bureau of Land Management on whether it can buy or lease land to expand the South Canyon Landfill.
A memo written by city Public Works Director Robin Millyard in October says the landfill is in an “overfill condition,” meaning that refuse material has been placed above the final grades of an approved design and operation plan.
Millyard’s memo said preliminary estimates indicate an expansion could extend the life of the landfill by 25 to 30 years.
