BOULDER — The city of Boulder will immediately suspend sending any employees to Arizona on business, in a show of opposition to that state’s recently approved immigration law.
City Manager Jane Brautigam said late Tuesday night that she would send a memo to all city department heads today telling them not to attend seminars or otherwise travel on official business to the neighboring state.
Brautigam’s action came after a handful of people who attended the City Council meeting urged the elected leaders to boycott Arizona over its new law that targets illegal immigrants.
Critics of Arizona’s law, which gives police broad power to detain those whom they suspect are in the country illegally, say the law could lead to racial profiling.
Supporters of a Boulder boycott of the neighboring state’s businesses and interests said the city has a long track record of supporting human rights and diversity and should stand up against the law.
