A Denver man sentenced Tuesday to 28 years in prison in the death of a 2-year-old boy in 2008 was stopped in the middle of a suicide attempt Wednesday at the Denver County Jail, the Denver Sheriff Department said.

Earl Ryan, 41, had pleaded guilty to firing the shots that injured 30-year- old Thomas Crookham and killed his son, Noah, who was in his arms.

On Wednesday, a deputy conducting his rounds discovered Ryan in the act of cutting his throat with a broken razor, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment of nonlethal injuries.
