A man who fired a shotgun at Denver police in Lower Downtown in 2008 was convicted by a Denver jury of attempted murder late Monday. Andres Castillo, 28, took the weapon from his fatally wounded cousin, Mark Tabullo-Zuniga, 23, in a shootout at 18th and Market streets just before 2 a.m. on June 22, 2008.
Police say Tabullo-Zuniga was arguing with another man in a parking lot when gunfire erupted between the men. When two police officers arrived, Tabullo-Zuniga fired on them, and the officers returned fired and killed him. The officers were not hit.
A jury deliberated for a day before finding Castillo guilty of two counts of attempted second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault.
