Former Broomfield High School teacher and wrestling coach Travis Masse has been charged with sexual assault on a child for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with an underage student.

The announcement was made Wednesday by Broomfield District Attorney Don Quick and Broomfield Police Chief Thomas Deland.

In a statement, they said that in April the Broomfield Police Department began investigating allegations that a Broomfield teacher had an inappropriate relationship with a student.

They said that during the investigation information was developed that during the 2008-2009 school year Masse allegedly engaged in a sexual relation with a student.

Masse, 28, was arrested on Tuesday and taken to the Broomfield Detention Center.

Quick said Masse has been charged with two class-three felonies: sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, and sexual assault on a child that exhibited a pattern of abuse.

In 2009, Masse was named Colorado wrestling coach of the year after leading Broomfield to the 4A state championship.

Broomfield High School principal Ginger Ramsey sent a letter today to the “Broomfield High Community” informing recipients that the Broomfield police had announced the arrest of a former Broomfield High teacher and coach for “alleged criminal contact with students”.

Ramsey did not mention Masse by name.

In her letter, Ramsey said neither the district administration nor the Broomfield High administration can comment specifically on the case.

She said parents or students, if they have concerns or information to share about the investigation, can call Broomfield police at 303-438-6400.

“Please know that, as BVSD administration and I have stated many times, nothing is more important to the district and Broomfield High staff than the physical and emotional well being of each of our students,” said Ramsey in the letter.

Ramsey said that while she cannot discuss the case, she is available to discuss any general concerns about student safety and well being at Broomfield High. She said people with such concerns should contact her at ginger.ramsey@bvsd.org or 720-561-5375.
