ENGLEWOOD, Colo.—A member of the Colorado National Guard wounded by sniper fire in Iraq is being awarded the Purple Heart.
Sgt. Martin May will receive the award Saturday at the Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church in Englewood.
May is with the 3rd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery. He chose to wait until his unit returned from Iraq so he could receive the Purple Heart in front of the soldiers he served with.
The award will be made during the unit’s Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Retreat Program, a Defense Department initiative designed to provide support and outreach to service members recently returned from deployments lasting more than 90 days.
