ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods has added the British Open to his summer schedule.

Woods has a chance to become the first player in the 150-year history of the British Open to win three times at St. Andrews, where golf’s oldest championship will be held July 15-18.

Woods, who withdrew from the final round of The Players Championship May 9 with a neck injury, also has the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and the AT&T National at Aronimink on his schedule.

Redskins take a Holliday

ASHBURN, Va. — Defensive lineman Vonnie Holliday, who had five sacks in 16 games with the Broncos last season, signed a free-agent deal with the Washington Redskins.

• New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, recovering from surgery in February to stabilize the patella ligament in his left knee, threw some passes while participating in drills on a limited basis, the first day of organized team activities.

• Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson skipped the team’s first voluntary practice in hopes of receiving a new contract.

Lancaster takes lead in California

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — Brett Lancaster surged ahead of a group of 26 riders in the waning meters and claimed the rain-soaked second stage and the overall lead in the Tour of California.

Lancaster, who began the day 10 seconds behind in 85th position, completed the 110.1-mile leg in 4 hours, 38 minutes and 45 seconds.

Peter Sagan finished second and Lars Boom finished third in the same as the winner. Levi Leiphei- mer, the three-time defending race winner, and Rabobank teammate Lance Armstrong both finished in the lead group. Lancaster holds a four-second race lead over Sagan and Karl Menzies because of his 10-second time bonus.

Matthew Goss won the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish in Cava de Tirreni, Italy, and Alexandre Vinokourov maintained a 72-second lead over Cadel Evans in the overall standings.

Tyler Farrar of Boulder-based Garmin-Transitions finished third in the same time (4:08.17) as Goss.
