Catchers often become human bruises. But for all the foul tips he has absorbed and kidney stones he has passed, Miguel Olivo had never been hurt like this. He face-planted on a delayed steal to second base in the seventh inning. Olivo was removed from the game as a precaution and is listed as day to day.
Tulo OK after collision.
Troy Tulowitzki avoided an injury in the first inning after colliding slightly with left fielder Seth Smith on a shallow popup. Smith stepped on Tulowitzki’s right foot, leading to a visit by the training staff. Tulowitzki favored the foot for about two innings but remained in the game, even making a backhanded play to end the fifth inning.
Phantom tag.
The Cubs caught a break in the fourth when second-base umpire Derryl Cousins incorrectly ruled that second baseman Ryan Theriot tagged Brad Hawpe to start a double play. Replays showed Theriot missed the right fielder.
Law and order.
Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female Supreme Court justice, was a guest of the Cubs, handing the game ball to the umpires. Her instructions: “Make sure it’s fair.”
