It’s a little quiet out there.
Maybe people are saving up energy for Memorial Day next week, which is always a party.
We’ve got to be ready for that one — cookouts, picnics and other outdoor capers will be plentiful. The three days off can become exhausting if one isn’t prepared for the onslaught of fun.
Still, there are happenings about town. We might be waiting to explode into summer next weekend, but there’s plenty to keep party people occupied. Here’s a sampling of what’s going on.
The Lotus Clubs crew isn’t slowing down at all. If anything, they’re doing a test run this week.
Tonight’s main event, at Suite Two Hundred (1427 Larimer St.), is an afterparty for the Cobra Starship show at the Fillmore Auditorium. The party highlight is a DJ set by Starship’s singer, Gabe Saporta. Starship is riding high on its single “I Make Them Good Girls Go Bad,” starring “Gossip Girl” actress Leighton Meester. The kids love ’em, which is why it’s too bad many of the band’s fans won’t be able to get into Suite Two Hundred for the party.
The party also features a live performance from Aurora rapper H*Wood, doing his dancey single “Could It Be You (Punk Rock Chick).” Models from the newly relaunched will be in attendance as well, taking photos with guests and generally looking pretty.
Also tonight, City Hall (1144 Broadway) hosts an event just for the ladies.
“Floralia: A Festival of Wine, Women and Song” takes over the venue for a girls- only evening of live music and art. Guests are encouraged to bust out their bright spring clothes and arrive early for happy hour from 6 to 8 p.m., then stay for food and shopping. Music acts on the bill include Somethin’ About Lulu, Olive Street Rehab and Sunday Girl.
Tickets are $20 at the door. Visit ithrive to learn more about iThrive, the local women’s organization that’s throwing the party.
Then, on Saturday, it’s back to Suite Two Hundred for another lady-friendly event. “A Sex and the City Affair” celebrates the release of “Sex and the City 2.” The sequel to the girliest girly movie of all time comes out Monday, so Saturday’s the night to gather a crew of female friends and get excited.
The party features special Skyy Vodka cocktails to mark the occasion, each with an appropriately glamorous name: “Redover Heels,” “Park Avenue Princess” and “Blonde Ambition” are a few of the swanky sips they’ve devised. Guests can also snag “Sex and the City” T-shirts, martini accessories and other goodies, and enter to win free tickets to the movie’s opening night.
One more thing for Saturday: Dance fans can help raise money for contemporary dance company Ballet Nouveau Colorado at “Scavenger Nouveau,” a whirlwind race through downtown Denver.
The hunt starts at the Magnolia Hotel Ballroom (817 17th St.) and has participants race to downtown hot spots like HBurger, Mix Music Lounge and The Drink for clues and prizes. Wear a costume and prepare to get silly.
Tickets are $40; sign up in advance at . Registration begins at 6 p.m. Saturday; the race starts at 7:15.
Trance and dance.
Thursday’s show at Beta (1909 Blake St.) is a must-see for trance fans.
Trance and progressive DJ Armin van Buuren stops in to spin, one of only a few dates he’s doing in the United States at the moment. In June, he starts the annual Ibiza ritual, bouncing between the Spanish party city and other gigs around the world.
Advance tickets are $30 at groovetickets. Doors open at 9 p.m. Thursday.
