Dexter Fowler started Wednesday for the first time in five games, needing offensive production to warrant more playing time. Manager Jim Tracy compared his situation to that of Carlos Gonzalez last year. Fowler went 0-for-3 and is hitting .228.

“We are trying to develop two players (in Seth Smith and Fowler),” Tracy said.

Melvin Mora made his first start in a week since injuring his right glute. Of his 14 starts, five have come at third base, where he showed again Wednesday that he’s more comfortable defensively than he is at second base.

Astros second baseman Kazuo Matsui, a key member of the Rockies’ 2007 World Series team, admitted before the game that he was hitting “terrible.” The club agreed, releasing the former starter after the game.
