A man accused of shooting two revelers at a New Year’s party in Arvada has been indicted by a federal grand jury.
Francisco Ornelas-Camacho, 20, was indicted Monday on possession of a firearm by an illegal alien, according to a media release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Ornelas-Camacho was living in Thornton at the time of the double shooting and is a citizen of Mexico, according to the release.
He also faces two counts of attempted murder, and two counts of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
Ornelas-Camacho is being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
“As a result of the shooting, the federal indictment alleges that the defendant knowingly possessed one or more firearms while being an alien who was illegally and unlawfully in the United States,” according to the release.
The shooting happened on January 1 at about 2 a.m. in the 6400 block of West 80th Drive, at the Lake Arbor subdivision, according to police.
According to police, Ornelas-Camacho fled the scene and was arrested later that day.
The victims, both men, are ages 21 and 23. A motive in the shooting was not released.
If convicted, Ornelas-Camacho faces not more than 10 years in federal prison, and up to a $250,000 fine. He also faces possible deportation after any punishment on the state and federal levels.
