AURORA — Mother Nature wreaked havoc with the Class 5A girls golf state tournament on Monday.
The tournament’s first round of play was suspended around 12:30 p.m. due to worsening wind conditions at the CommonGround Golf Course. All of the competitors had begun their opening rounds but none of the groups had completed 18 holes before officials from the Colorado Women’s Golf Association ruled the wind conditions had grown too extreme to continue play.
The Colorado High School Activities Association plans to complete the tournament Tuesday. The opening round will resume this morning at 6:50. Once the first round finally is complete, the course will be reset in hopes of beginning the second round at noon.
“The wind conditions basically made the course unplayable,” said CHSAA assistant commissioner Bert Borgmann. “The CWGA officials made that call on the course as the wind kept picking up and the conditions worsened. They just weren’t conducive to getting through this round.”
The 4A tournament, which is being held at Cobble Creek in Montrose, had been set to start at 8:30 this morning but won’t kick off until 1 p.m. Final groups will tee off around 3 p.m.
If the first round isn’t completed today it will finish up Tuesday morning, pushing back the start of the second round.
