A boil water advisory will continue in effect until at least 6 p.m. today for residents of part of west Denver, Denver Water said this morning.

The advisory affects residents and businesses between 10th Avenue and 24th Avenue and Federal Boulevard and Tennyson Street.

Residents living in the area can obtain clean water at two distribution points:

– Cheltenham Elementary School, 1580 Julian St.

– Sloan’s Lake Park off 17th Avenue near the tennis courts.

Water to the area was disrupted about 10:30 a.m. Thursday when a FasTracks contractor working near 12th Avenue and Knox Court ruptured a 30-inch water main.

Yesterday afternoon Denver Water went door-to-door in the neighborhoods advising people to boil their water.

Those who weren’t home received a notice on their doors. A reverse emergency call with a bilingual message was also phoned into the area.

Denver Water spokeswoman Stacy Chesney said the FasTracks contractor repaired the water main Thursday night and the main has been disinfected. It will be flushed today, she said.

Chesney said that when the boil water advisory is over, another reverse emergency call will go out to local residents to advise them that the water is clear. Denver Water will also go door-to-door with flyers saying the water advisory is over.

Chesney said the boil water advisory was issued as a precautionary measure as required by the state when water pressure dropped below a certain level.

Water main breaks resulting in a loss of pressure can introduce disease-causing organisms into the water system. People with severely compromised immune systems, infants and some elderly may be at risk.

The boil water advisory said water should be boiled before drinking for three minutes and then allowed to cool.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com
