A forest fire north of Golden was declared under control tonight, though firefighters will remain on the scene overnight to make sure it does not flare up again.

A single-engine plane bombed the fire with slurry before nightfall, giving firefighters a leg up.

“The two airdrops were pretty much successful in bringing the fire to its knees,” said Jacki Kelley Jefferson County Sheriffs spokeswoman.

Kelley said firefighters expect to be able to clean up and leave on Saturday.

The fire started about 5 p.m. just south of 8775 Blue Mountain Drive, which is located south of Coal Creek Canyon Road, and west of Highway 93 in Arvada.

Arvada Fire and the Forest Service are also on scene. Air support was called in from Buena Vista, and the first airdrop was made about 7:30 p.m.

Kelley said the fire burned about four or five acres during its peak, and spread slowly. The fire got as close as 100 yards from a home at one point, but no evacuations were necessary, Kelley said.
