SILT, Colo.—Officials at a wildlife rehabilitation center say a 1-year-old malnourished bear that emerged from hibernation weighing 13 pounds is healthy and gaining weight.
Wildlife officials feared the bear would not survive after it emerged from hibernation weighing 13 pounds. A woman found the bear close to a road on Aspen Mountain and brought it to a nearby shelter before it was taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center near Silt in western Colorado.
The bear should’ve weighed more than 30 pounds when it came out of hibernation.
Nanci Limbach, the founder of the rehabilitation center, says she estimates the bear now weighs 40 pounds and could be released in July near Steamboat Springs.
