“Alice in Wonderland”
**** | Tim Burton outdoes Tim Burton in this special-effects extravaganza. His “Wonderland” has only a nodding acquaintance with Disney’s cuddlier 1951 animated version. Since everyone already knows the story, be forewarned that this version is more like “Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands,” and children too young for them are too young for this one, too. That said, it’s hard to argue with Burton’s imagination, even if it does turn toward darkness. PG. 1 hour, 48 minutes. Claire Martin, The Denver Post
“The Wolfman”
** 1/2 | Universal’s revisit of its 1941 monster classic, starring Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro, won’t make you howl with fear or weep with sorrow. Either would have been appropriate for a story about one man’s burden of being made a beast. Were the gypsy chieftess played by Geraldine Chaplin in the original to read the entrails strewn about this R-rated movie, she might say with foreboding, “I see two actors fighting against the mist and murk to bring a drama about curses, supernatural and familial, to vivid life. They don’t quite succeed.” On the other hand, Emily Blunt is a beacon of light. R. 1 hour, 43 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
