MCLEAN, Va. — The reigning National Spelling Bee champion is back again — this time with her 8-year-old sister. Third-grader Vanya Shivashankar from Kansas is the youngest competitor at this year’s bee, which begins today and ends with the finals Friday night.

Vanya’s sister, Kavya, won last year’s bee and has been helping her sister out. Vanya traces the words on her hand before spelling them, just as her sister did. One difference: Kavya wants to be a neurosurgeon, while Vanya wants to be a heart surgeon.
