A man was shot multiple times in the doorway of his home in Parkland Square Apartments in Littleton Tuesday, and police are still piecing together the circumstances that led to the 1 a.m. assault.
The man has not been named, pending notification of his family.
Police said a “younger” Hispanic man, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, wearing a hooded sweatshirt “came into the apartment complex and walked directly to the victim’s apartment door,” according to a statement released this afternoon.
“The suspect knocked until he got the victim to answer. When the victim opened the door, witnesses believed there was an exchange of words prior to the suspect pulling a gun and opening fire on the victim at close range.”
He continued shooting, even after the man closed the door, police stated.
The assailant left with another person in a waiting car, possibly a dark Pontiac Grand Am or a Honda Prelude, according to police.
A half dozen Littleton police officers were in the parking lot of the complex between Santa Fe Drive and Federal Boulevard this evening, and one officer called it an “active crime scene.”
A Littleton police spokesman did not return calls to comment beyond the statement released late this afternoon.
The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at the complex at 750 W. Belleview Ave., between Santa Fe Drive and South Broadway. The apartments are immediately east of Belleview, Commerce and Progress parks.
The man died from his wounds a short time later at Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.
