DETROIT — Tigers right-hander Armando Galarraga was given a 2010 Corvette convertible by General Motors for his near-perfect game Wednesday night that was wiped out by an umpire’s blown call.
The automaker surprised Galarraga before the start of Thursday’s 12-6 victory over the Indians.
GM executive Mark Reuss said the way Galarraga handled the incredible events deserved to be recognized, regardless of what record books would ultimately show.
Reuss said he has known the Ilitch family, owners of the Tigers, his entire life, and the family has always been a great supporter of General Motors.
“It is only fitting we help give back for all the Ilitches have done for Detroit and to celebrate Armando’s pitching and sportsmanship during one of the most captivating evenings in Tigers history,” Reuss said.
A little extra pub probably wouldn’t hurt the troubled automaker, either.
