Getting your player ready...

Originally when I began the “Six Weeks to Your Best Year Ever,” series in this column, it was a reflection of requests from readers. What I didn’t expect is the huge change it would make in my life as well!

Researching and writing those columns made me want to get out and live more. What came to light is I’ve been so focused on introspection, rehabilitation and reflection that I’ve become a bit of a homebody. Who says living life on your own terms means cutting yourself off from the world socially?

The tips featured in “Six Weeks” energized, revitalized and mobilized me (I hope they did the same for you). Much of this year will be about trying and doing new things – getting this “old dog” out-and-about doing new things. So, in my typical somewhat-reformed-Type A-personality status, I’ve decided to take on a huge challenge – entering a physique contest this summer. Yikes!

A middle child to the more robust “bodybuilding” and more petite “bikini” competitions, “physique” is a new category for those of us who don’t easily fit (or don’t want to compete) in the other two categories. That’s my take on it anyway! And I’m glad for it. Bodybuilding would be fun, as I love lifting weights, but truly don’t have the desire to bulk up any more than my current physical state. Bikini would be sheer torture, I think, as I’m not that “petite” body type. The image I conjure is Kate Moss-esque meals and more cardio than anyone would want to tackle. The new “physique” category will prove to be a challenge, yet more realistic than masochistic. No doubt it will create fortitude of mental, physical and nutritional proportions — as what goes in the body makes up about 80 percent of the physical transformation.

Working with six-time Mixed Martial Arts Champion Jeff Ford (one of the trainers featured in week four of the “Six Weeks” series), we have our sights set on my participating in a competition this summer. – that’s about 90 days people. What am I thinking? The thought of having to walk on stage in a skimpy sequined bikini would motivate most anyone — unfortunately, it doesn’t motivate me — so I’ll have to dig deep and commit to making sure I follow Ford’s every instruction.

Currently, traveling to his gym in Lonetree is a 45 minute trek one way, so I’m even moving closer to make sure I can fit the often masochistic workouts in without excuse. They are tough, but I must say, very energizing and thoroughly empowering. I’ll keep you updated monthly on the progress, and with luck (and a bit of gumption), have an awe inspiring before and after to share come Back-to-school time.

What is it that you’d like to do but haven’t made the time or effort? Let me know in the comments or via email.
