A 72-year-old bicyclist was injured Sunday night when he was hit by an RTD shuttle bus on the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver.

The man, who was not identified, was riding a bicycle about 9:40 p.m. north on the Mall between Lawrence and Larimer streets when the accident happened, said Scott Reed, an RTD spokesman.

Reed said the shuttle driver honked his horn at the bicyclist, who pulled over into the center portion of the mall, out of the shuttle lane.

As the shuttle passed the bike the bicyclist hit the brakes and went over the handle bars, Reed said. The man’s leg was run over by a back wheel of the shuttle.

He was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. Further details on his condition were not available.

Reed said bicycle riding is permitted on the Mall on Sundays, but prohibited the rest of the week.

The accident is under investigation.
