Tom Varndell opened the second half with his second try of Wednesday’s game, and the England Saxons went on to a 49-17 win over Russia in the Churchill Cup rugby tournament at Infinity Park in Glendale.
Flanker Tom Wood opened the scoring for the Saxons, who dominated the first half and led 28-14 at halftime. England faces the USA Eagles on Saturday at Infinity.
Lappe adds Chatterton to her CU staff.
New University of Colorado women’s basketball coach Linda Lappe completed her staff by hiring Jonas Chatterton as an assistant.
Chatterton will work on recruiting, opponent scouting, post play development, and offensive and defensive schemes. He spent eight years as an assistant at Brigham Young, from 2001-09. He worked for a medical supply company in San Diego last year and coached club basketball. BYU competed in four NCAA Tournaments while Chatterton was there.
UNC’s Shannon honored.
Northern Colorado’s Mark Shannon, who played six different positions this past season, was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team as a multiple position athlete.
Shannon, from Chatfield High School, hit .326 and had a 4.52 earned run average, second-best on the Bears’ staff.
Eaton, Martin win Mashie title.
Kim Eaton can finally say she won a Colorado Women’s Golf Association Mashie Championship.
After finishing as a runner-up seven times, Eaton (Riverdale Golf Club) and partner Melissa Martin (Bookcliff Country Club) won the Mashie title with a 5 and 4 win over Cindy Pallatino and Kelly Schaub, both of CommonGround G.C., at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.
In the consolation match, Robyn Asbury and Danielle Atkinson of The Pinery C.C. defeated Laurie Steenrod and Lisa Stone of Saddle Rock G.C. 1 up.
Ruegsegger named academic All-American.
University of Denver hockey player Tyler Ruegsegger was named to ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America men’s at-large first team, as selected by college sports information directors.
Ruegsegger, a senior from Lakewood, tallied 41 points on 16 goals and 25 assists last season and earned a 3.95 grade-point-average in management.

The Denver apountry Caravan stops in Pueblo today and Colorado Springs on Friday, and Thunder, the team’s live mascot, is making both trips, along with alumni, cheerleaders, and Miles the mascot.
The event in Pueblo is at the Thunderbowl on Bonforte Boulevard from 5-7 p.m. Autograph signings include cheerleaders and Miles at U.S. Bank on North Main Street from 11 a.m.-noon and 1-2 p.m., and Billy Thompson at the Chipotle on North Elizabeth Street from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
The Colorado Springs stop on Friday is at the Grace Center for Athletics at St. Mary’s High School from 5-7 p.m.
Buffs’ relay team fails to advance.
CU’s men’s 4 x 100-meter relay team placed 17th in the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, not fast enough to advance to the finals.
A.J. Whitaker, Quinton Dodson, Kyle MacIntosh and Jeremy Dodson were sixth in their heat with a time of 40.35 seconds. The Buffs were eighth when Jeremy Dodson received the baton, and he was able to close on the pack and make up two spots.
• Air Force’s Sara Neubauer finished seventh in the discus with a heave of 172 feet, 9 inches. Jeneva McCall of Southern Illinois won the event at 180-4.
