DENVER—The U.S. Department of Labor says The Wackenhut Corp. has agreed to pay $290,000 in back pay and interest to settle allegations that it discriminated against black applicants to be Denver airport security screeners.
G4S Wackenhut President Drew Levine (la-VINE’) said Friday that the company “absolutely denies” any hiring discrimination but settled to resolve the matter.
The department alleged the Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.-based company rejected 446 black job applicants between 2002 and 2003, as the Transportation Security Administration was ramping up to handle screening following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The Department of Labor says 41 of the rejected applicants will be hired as part of the settlement.
