GREELEY, Colo.—Greeley and Weld County crews are digging a ditch to divert water that has burst through the banks of the Poudre (POO’-der) River.

Officials have closed roads in the city over the past few days as the high, swiftly running river has overflowed. The river spilled into three gravel pits when it burst through a bank Tuesday, and there’s concern nearby homes and businesses will be flooded.

Heavy rains and melting snow have caused the river to top its banks.

Water levels were expected to drop Tuesday but a flood warning is in effect through early Wednesday morning.

Area farmers are also recovering from a hail storm that may have pummeled as much as 50,000 acres of crops.
