DENVER—A teacher who tackled a suspected shooter outside a Colorado school will receive an honor from a national school safety group.
David Benke is credited with knocking down Bruco (BROO’-so) Stong Eagle Eastwood outside Deer Creek Middle School after two students were shot and wounded Feb. 23.
Benke will receive the honor from the School Safety Advocacy Council during its conference in Orlando, Fla., July 26-30.
Eastwood faces several charges, including attempted murder and is being held on $1 million cash bail.
Benke has received a new car, a ride with the Air Force Thunderbirds, and honors from the Colorado Legislature and state school resource and drug prevention officers’ groups.
