GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A Colorado legislator thinks part-time state employees shouldn’t get benefits—but isn’t sure the policy should extend to lawmakers who work just part of the year.
Rep. Laura Bradford says businesses don’t offer part-time workers benefits and the state might be wasting taxpayer’s money by doing so.
But the Collbran Republican says she’s less sure legislators should be lumped in with part-time state employees. Bradford says legislators get a part-time wage, but often work full-time. She says that makes it tough to find people to run for office.
The state pays more than $191 million for medical and dental coverage. Employees who work 30 hours a week or fewer account for $10 million of that.
