TRINIDAD, Colo.—A prison guard is recovering after being assaulted by an inmate at the prison in Trinidad.
Guard Duane Garcia said inmate Harold Martin beat him with his fist and kicked him in the face Sunday. Garcia says the attack came a day after he wrote Martin up for sitting in a prohibited part of the cafeteria.
Martin is serving an eight-year sentenced for a burglary conviction in El Paso County and has been moved to the state’s highest-security prison, the Colorado State Penitentiary in Canon City.
The Trinidad prison is categorized as just above minimum security. State records show that Martin had been placed there despite being involved in five previous fights. He was disciplined for those and the state says Trinidad was an appropriate prison for him.
