PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Cristie Kerr shot a 3-under-par 69 despite persistent rain Saturday and extended her lead to a tournament-record eight shots after three rounds of the LPGA Championship.

Kerr, the top-ranked American seeking her second career major title, opened the day with a five-shot lead. Her advantage entering today’s final round tops the mark of seven set in 1961 by winner Mickey Wright.

Mika Miyazato double-bogeyed No. 18 to finish at 72 and fall into a three-way tie for second with rookie Azahara Muñoz and Jimin Kang after both finished with 70s.

Kerr has played near-flawless golf since an opening 68 on Thursday put her in a three-way tie for the lead. On Saturday, Kerr took charge on the back nine. After a bogey-5 on No. 10, Kerr responded with three straight birdies. She then bogeyed No. 14 but came back with an 8-foot birdie on the par-3 15th.

Justin Rose shot a 68 and holds a three-stroke lead over Ben Curtis (64) heading into the final round of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.

Dan Forsman shot a 6-under 66 and took a one-shot lead over Brad Bryant (67) after two rounds at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in Endicott, N.Y.

• Welshman Bradley Dredge shot a 5-under 67 to extend his lead at the BMW International Open in Munich to three strokes.

Emily Tubert beat Lisa McCloskey 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final match to win the Women’s Amateur Public Links championship in South Bend, Ind.

Schelotto paves way for Crew

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored in the 57th minute and assisted on Eric Brunner‘s score as the Columbus Crew beat D.C. United 2-0 in MLS play.

Juan Pablo Angel scored two late goals, both after long runs down the right side of the field, in the New York Red Bulls’ 3-0 victory over the host Kansas City Wizards.

David Ferreira‘s penalty-kick goal in the 61st minute gave FC Dallas a 2-1 road win over Chivas USA.

• Toronto FC and the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy played to a scoreless draw.

Thorn appears out as Nets GM

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — A person with knowledge of the decision said 69-year-old Rod Thorn will resign as general manager of the New Jersey Nets next month.

It is not clear if Thorn, who was given the dual job of president and general manager when new owner Mikhail Prokhorov chose not to renew the contract of general manager Kiki Vandeweghe, will remain with the team.
