CHAMA, N.M.—Fire officials say a blaze that damaged a historic railroad trestle in northern New Mexico has been fully contained, but the investigation into how the fire started continues.
Officials with the Carson National Forest, the New Mexico State Fire Marshal’s office and local authorities are trying to determine what caused railroad ties on the Lobato Trestle to catch fire Wednesday. The trestle is about four miles north of Chama.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad says engineers are expected to finish examining the trestle Sunday, but it will be about a week before the extent of the damage is known.
The railroad halted departures from Chama and has been busing passengers to Antonito, Colo., for a ride on the line’s Colorado side. New Mexico and Colorado jointly own the tourist railroad.
