Perhaps the most overlooked legacy of Colorado’s mining heritage is the one best viewed from the seat of a bicycle. Miners leave mining roads, and mining roads make great mountain-biking venues.

The former Summit County mining town of Breckenridge qualifies as the Big Rock Candy Mountain of mountain biking. Breck is showcasing its expansive backcountry trail network originally laid out by the town’s hardscrabble founders during the second annual Breck Bike Week, next Monday through July 11.

But bike enthusiasts can get a head start on the festivities on the Fourth of July with the Firecracker 50 mountain bike race.

Visitors are welcome to race or partake in any of the noncompetitive elements of the week, including high-end bike demos, guided group rides, bike-in movie nights, trail building, clinics, bike fits and tunes and kids’ races.
