Celebrities like to keep the details of their weddings a secret until after they’ve tied the knot. All those pesky fans buzzing around and paparazzi in helicopters circling above make for a less-than-intimate exchange of vows.
Which is why information is sketchy about the upcoming nups between Denver Nuggets star forward Carmelo Anthony and television personality La La Vazquez. It has been widely reported that the event will come down July 10 in New York City. And the wedding planner is Mindy Weiss, who orchestrated the parties for Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, and Heidi Klum and Seal, among other couples.
But start asking more detailed questions, and everyone clams up. Weiss’ office won’t reveal more until after the ceremony. If you can wait until Sept. 19, you’ll be able to see the whole thing in vivid detail when VH1 begins airing a five-part series on the wedding, including dress shopping, choosing the venue, the menu and Vazquez’s bachelorette party in Las Vegas. The series culminates in an hour-long special on the ceremony and reception.
But there are a couple of details we can share: We know what Melo will wear on the big day. Sure, the bride’s gown (reported to be by Vera Wang) is what everyone swoons over, but Melo has to look sharp, too. And he will, according to Khalilah Williams- Webb, who has been styling his wardrobe for several years.
Williams-Webb says Los Angeles- based custom tailor Waraire Boswell is designing a navy blue tuxedo for Anthony. “He wanted a more classic look, so when he looks at the pictures in 10 years it will look timeless,” says the stylist. Boswell has designed other suits for Anthony, including one the athlete wore during the NBA All Star Weekend earlier this year.
(Outfitting Anthony’s son Kiyan, 3, will be Jack Mass, a Canadian designer.)
“Carmelo’s whole look, except for shoes, will be Boswell,” Williams- Webb says, noting that the athlete is deciding among three favorite designer labels of shoes: Louis Vuitton, Magnanni or Esquivel.
“He’ll probably wear a watch and cuff links, but that will be it as far as jewelry goes,” she says.
Anthony will change into another outfit after the wedding, and Williams-Webb says it will feature his favorite color, red. At the reception, “You start to dance and peel off the layers and roll up your sleeves,” she says. “Then you can expect to see some of his favorite color.” She said it wouldn’t be a red jacket but said the outfit would have “touches of red.”
The color will factor into at least one of the foods served at the reception, as well. Anthony told People magazine that the two details he cares about are the music selection and the cake flavor. His sweet request? Red velvet. As for the tunes, like the rest of us, unless you’re on the guest list, you’ll just have to wait to find out.
