BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to miss six weeks with a broken left foot, and the team says pitcher Clay Buchholz (strained hamstring) might be able to avoid the disabled list. He is not scheduled to start this week.
All-star catcher Victor Martinez, injured Sunday, has a broken bone in the tip of his left thumb. He won’t need surgery, but it’s unclear how long he might be out.
Footnotes.
Carlos Zambrano will be placed on the restricted list, and the Cubs expect to be without the hot-tempered pitcher until at least the all-star break as he reportedly gets treatment for anger-management issues.
• Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordoñez was scratched from the lineup against Minnesota with a recurrence of the injury to his side that kept him out earlier this month. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Ordoñez “doesn’t feel right” and would be examined by a doctor.
• Pirates second baseman Bobby Crosby left the game against the Cubs with concussionlike symptoms after colliding with right fielder Lastings Milledge.
• The Braves placed rookie outfielder Jason Heyward on the 15-day DL with a deep bone bruise in his left thumb.
• The Rangers are planning for right-hander Omar Beltre to make his major-league debut Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Angels.
