DENVER—Former President Bill Clinton is backing a challenger to Colorado’s new Democratic senator. It’s a departure from President Barack Obama, who endorsed the incumbent.

Clinton’s endorsement of former House Speaker Andrew Romanoff was sent to Democratic voters Tuesday. The former president says Romanoff “worked harder than anyone” to boost Democrats in Colorado over the last few election cycles.

Romanoff is challenging Sen. Michael Bennet, who was appointed to the seat last year when former Sen. Ken Salazar became Interior Secretary.

Romanoff won Democratic party caucuses and led in a statewide Democratic assembly. But the former state House speaker has struggled to raise as much money as Bennet, who got a personal fundraising visit from Obama last spring.
